Rally and Advance: William Monroe volleyball fights back to advance to region semis

William Monroe volleyball got going at just the right time Tuesday night, rallying from down two games to storm back for a 3-2 win over James Monroe in the Region 3B quarterfinals. 

 

The Dragons advance to the Region 3B semifinals where they’ll face Goochland Thursday at 6:30 p.m. with a state tournament bid on the line. 

 

Mara Woolford had a monster night, helping power Monroe reeling off three straight wins after going down 25-18 and 25-15 in game one and two. Woolford had a team-high 19 kills and eight digs, a big-time all-around performance. 

 

The Dragons flipped the script in game three and four, winning 25-18 and 25-13. They really got going in game five, winning 15-8 to keep their season alive.

 

Breanna Morgan had a huge night defensively with six blocks while Ella Weaver was also big-time up front, posting nine kills while coming up with three blocks. Morgan also chipped in five kills, helping keep the James Monroe defense honest against Woolford along with Morgan Lam and Savannah Meade who notched four kills each. 

 

Alexis Clark and Lam had nine digs and eight digs respectively. Alex Sharff and Caitlin Shortridge had 22 and 20 assists while splitting the setter role.
