William Monroe swimmers perform well at Conference 28 meet

William Monroe’s boys and girls swim team made it clear in the first year of the Conference 28 Championships—the Dragons may be one of the smallest 3A schools in the state, but they’re not getting pushed around in swimming.

The Dragons’ boys squad finished third while the girls missed a conference championship by just 11 points, falling to John Champe 136-125.

Kara Taylor’s championship run in the 100-breaststroke and Zoe Williams’ title-winning swim in the 50-free helped ignite the Dragon girls’ second place finish. The Dragons had a pair of second place finishes in the 200-medley relay and 400-free relay, with a third place in the 200-free thrown in for good measure. Sammy Hammer, Skylar Valentin, Taylor and Williams teamed up on both second place relay squads while Amber Morris, Savannah Stevens, Katie Succup and Brooke combined on the third place 200-free squad.

Other individual medalists for the Monroe girls were Amber Morris in the 100-fly, Hammer in the 200 free and 400 free, Valentin in the 100-back and Brooke Baker in the 50-free.

On the men’s side, the Dragons got individual medals out of Tyler Bunyea in the 100 back and 200 free, Lucas Ward in the 400 free and Wyatt Morin in the 200 IM and 100 breast.

The men’s 200-medley relay team of Bunyea, Michael Kleine, Morin and Alec Yost took third in their race while Bunyea, Josh Baker, Alec Yost and Morin grabbed second in the 400-free relay.

The Dragons who made region cuts will head to the 3A East championships Sunday in Richmond.
