Nelson County puts away Craig County for first win of season

Nelson County was close a week ago at Page. Against Craig County they tried to make sure it was never in doubt.

The Governors beat Craig County 36-28 for their first win of 2018, putting the game out of reach with 1:49 to play on Felix Rodriguez’ 14-yard touchdown run. Nelson led by as much as 28-6 late in the third quarter.

Rodriguez rushed for a team-high 121 yards and two touchdowns, pairing with George Brown, the sophomore quarterback who accounted for 102 yards on the ground and another 170 through the air on 12-for-19 passing. Brown helped the Governors build that 28-6 third quarter lead with a 42-yard touchdown run, a five-yard touchdown run and a 16-yard touchdown toss to Jamel Rose. Nelson led 14-0 at the break and 20-0 midway through the third.

Rose finished with 105 yards on four catches including the touchdown.

Nelson’s defense stepped up in a big way on third downs, limiting Craig to just two conversions on nine attempts. Craig did manage to convert a pair of fourth downs on the night. Damien Jacques notched four tackles including two for a loss for the Governors.

Nelson County will try and make it two in a row when they travel to take on George Mason.
