Madison County explodes past Nandua

At first it didn’t seem like Madison County quarterback Chris Smith was going to miss during Madison County’s 63-26 romp over Nandua in the Region 2A East first round.

By the time he did, it didn’t matter at all.

Smith started the game 4-for-4 through the air with three touchdowns and 229 yards on those four tosses, sparking Madison to a 35-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. He finished with 333 yards through the air and four scores without throwing a single interception as Madison County secured a spot in the second round of the Region 2A East bracket where they’ll face unbeaten Stuarts Draft in next week’s clash. Smith also rushed for a trio of touchdowns, accounting for seven total scores.

Meanwhile, Isiah Smith also started off in a big way by forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff and then scoring from 39 yards out to stake Madison to a 7-0 lead. Smith finished with a huge night on both sides of the ball, picking off three passes and rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 touches. He also came up with eight tackles, tying Jake Price for the team lead on the night.

Drew Twyman also picked off a pass for the Mountaineers while Dylan Breeden made six stops, forced a fumble and sacked Nandua’s Kelly Reagan twice. The Madison defense held Nandua to 287 yards of total offense while the Mountaineers piled up 526 yards of total offense.

That early onslaught was enough to give Madison the win, but the Mountaineers kept the pedal down, with Twyman finishing with 112 yards and two touchdowns through the air, Breeden finishing with 105 yards on three catches and Elijah Lewis catching two balls for 116 yards, with both going for touchdowns.
