William Monroe track places several athletes at Conference 23 meet

In the first ever Conference 28 track and field meet, several William Monroe athletes put together solid performances to score points and earn spots in the 3A East Region Championships.

On the boys side, Monroe’s Cody Perkins won the 400-meter race and Nick Hayes won the high jump for the Dragons. Perkins also took fourth in the 100.

Josh King and Drew Tate had a solid day in the hurdles, with King placing second in the 110 hurdles while Tate took fourth. In the 300 hurdles, King finished fifth and Tate took sixth. Dylan Schaff took third place in the shot put while Craig Jeffers snagged a sixth place in the triple jump.

Monroe’s boys 4×100 squad took fourth.

On the girls side, Jillisa Burke put together a strong all-around performance, taking second in the 400, sixth in the 100 and fourth in the high jump. Freshman Morgan Prior took fifth in the 3200 while Kenzie Gibson and Kyra Schaff took fourth and fifth respectively in the 100 hurdles.

The girls 4×100 squad also picked up points with a fourth place finish.

As a team, Monroe’s girls finished sixth while the boys finished fifth.

Those athletes and relay squads all advance to the Region 3A East championships at Culpeper County High on May 28.
