Western blows past Salem

Western Albemarle just needed a chance to actually finish a game. With a pair of contests against Deep Run and St. Anne’s-Belfield suspended due to weather earlier in the week—one the Warriors were in control of and another where STAB had taken control—Western finally got a chance to finish Friday night at home against Salem.

The Warriors rolled, beating the Spartans 18-10 with a solid effort from Western’s usual balanced offense.

Peyton Brandt and Bridget Shaffrey both notched hat tricks to handle the bulk of the scoring. Brandt also dished out a trio of assists on the night while Shaffrey had a pair of helpers.

Mady Baker and Linda Hexter also got in on the act with two goals each.

The Warriors held a 19-9 advantage on the draw with Shaffrey hauling in four of those while Baker had three and Katie Lesemann picked up two.

Maya Langman had nine saves.

The Warriors struggled to contain Salem junior Cate Pace, who poured in five goals on five shots, but Pace was the only Spartan who managed to do much damage. Salem has a young, inexperienced roster with no seniors on the squad and nine freshmen.

Western Albemarle takes a two-week break before returning to action on April 13.
