Week Five Volleyball Poll

Week five of our volleyball poll is out, and most of the poll held strong, though Louisa and Fluvanna County did move up in the rankings. The poll is tabulated from coaches throughout the area as well as votes from members of the local media.

Scrimmage Play’s Coaches and Media Poll

1. Western Albemarle

Warriors topped Monticello 3-1 then swept Monroe 3-0. The Warriors’ height is, predictably, giving opposing teams problems match in and match out.

2. Albemarle

The Patriots had another nailbiter on the road early in the week, but rolled 3-0 late in the week to stay unbeaten in the Commonwealth District.

3. Monticello

The Mustangs may have fallen to Western, but they’re the first Jefferson District team to take a game off the Warriors this year. Now Monticello takes on Louisa and William Monroe.

4. Fluvanna County

Flucos move up a spot and rightfully so. They took care of business against Orange and Goochland. Can they do the same against Charlottesville and Louisa this week?

5. William Monroe

The Dragons may have gotten swept by Western, but they’ve got some serious potential and should improve down the stretch. A battle with Monticello Thursday could be interesting.

6. Madison County

Mountaineers face Clarke County tonight in their Bull Run District home opener. They swept Manassas Park last week.

7. (tied) Covenant

The Eagles didn’t need long to put away St. Anne’s-Belfield in a 3-0 sweep with setter Emily Smethurst performing well enough to earn Scrimmage Play Athlete of the Week honors.

7. (tied) Nelson County

The Governors bounced back from a 3-2 loss to William Campbell two weeks ago with a pair of sweeps against Chatham and Appomattox.

9. Louisa County

The Lions continue to inch their way up the poll, this time with wins over Charlottesville and Goochland.

10. St. Anne’s-Belfield

The Saints are still getting revved up this season as they’re just four games in, but they’ve stumbled out of the gate with an 0-4 start. This week’s schedule includes No. 1 Western too, so it doesn’t get any easier.
