STAB hockey takes LIS title

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s field hockey team has vaulted itself into the state’s upper echelon this season, and Friday afternoon against Covenant, the Saints won another League of Independent Schools Division II title to cap a sterling season and build some momentum going into the state playoffs.

The Saints powered past Covenant 7-0 for STAB’s third win of the season over their crosstown rivals to clinch the conference title.

Six different Saints scored as STAB continued to spread the ball around as they’ve done all season. Lauren Gampper got the scoring started off a Morgan Woodrow assist and things rolled from there for the Saints. Sadie Bryant, Carlin Maurer, Woodrow and Isabell Scholz followed with goals in succession before Claiborne Dandridge broke through with two of her own to close out the scoring.

Gampper, Scholz, Bryant and Virginia Speidel all set the table for the Saints with an assist each.

STAB keeper Brittany Schoeb made a pair of saves on the day. Covenant keeper Alexis Steljes made 12 saves during the game on a barrage of STAB shots.

The victory gives the Saints the LIS title for the second straight year. Now STAB can turn its attention to the VISAA Division I playoffs where they’ve been tabbed as the No. 4 seed. They’ll host a Tuesday quarterfinal against Cape Henry Collegiate at 3 p.m.
