Speed and Balance: Albemarle girls beat Monticello

Albemarle’s girls basketball team came out of the gates fast and leaned on a balanced offense to beat Monticello on the road Thursday night.

The Patriots picked up a 70-50 victory over the Mustangs after jumping out to a 22-5 lead in the first quarter. It helped that Lauren Grady came out on fire against the Mustangs, scoring nine of her 19 points in the opening frame. As a team, the Patriots hit four 3-pointers in that first quarter with Riley Maynard knocking down two, Kaley Maynard hitting one and Grady rounding out the quartet.

Four Patriots finished in double figures with Grady’s 19 leading the way, Amaya Pendleton notching 16, Riley Maynard scoring 13 and Kaley Maynard finishing with 12. Both Maynards had three 3-pointers each.

The Patriots will face Mills Godwin in the Play for Preemies Showcase Saturday at Western Albemarle at 12:45 p.m.
