Patriots take CD title

Albemarle’s girls swim team was on a simple mission—avenge last year’s narrow loss in
the Commonwealth District championship meet.
Going into the final race Saturday, the Patriots already had the title in hand, up 24 points
before the 400-freestyle relay squads even hit the water.
Albemarle didn’t slow down in the 400-free though as Hannah Harper, Corie Morton,
Abby Wuensch and Holly Harper combined to win the race and put an exclamation point
on the Patriots’ 121-point posting and win over second place Colonial Forge with 93
points. It was the squad’s first district title since 2007 when the squad’s seniors were in
middle school.
Albemarle’s relays were rock solid throughout taking second in the 200-medley and 200-
freestyle to pile up 46 total points in the three relay races.
Individually, Holly Harper led the way with a pair of victories, winning the 50-free, not
one of her usual areas of expertise and 100-freestyle, qualifying for states in the 100-
free with a win by nearly three full seconds. She swam in both the 200-medley and 400-
freestyle teams as well.
Corie Morton also had a strong day and jumpstarted the Patriots by leading a dominant
200-freestyle performance by Albemarle. Morton took second, then Katie Pajewski in a
lifetime best outing took fifth and Mackenzie Jones took eighth.
That event, the second of the day on the girls side, gave Albemarle the lead for good.
Morton also took third in the 500-free and swam on the 200-medley and 400-free relays
as well.
Hannah Harper took fourth in the 200-IM and finished as the runner-up in the 100-
butterfly to go with strong legs on the 200-medley and 400-freestyle relays.
Harper’s butterfly performance spearheaded Albemarle in a similar surge to the 200-
freestyle, with Madison Noga taking fourth and Madison Haise taking fifth.
Emma Lockman provided valuable points with a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100-
backstroke and 200-IM.
While Orange County’s girls finished ninth, Larissa Neilan had a monster day for the
Hornets. She grabbed a second place in the 200-IM and then took third in the highly
competitive 100-breastroke race where the top three finishers including Neilan qualified
for the Group AAA state meet.
Northwest Region qualifiers will move on to the Northwest Region meet Friday at
George Mason’s Freedom Center in Fairfax.
