Passing the Test

Forest Lakes primary

Albemarle’s girls soccer team knew it needed to test itself against some Group 5A or higher opponents since they are one of just two 5A squads in the Jefferson District that makes up the bulk of their slate.

Getting a look at their squad against the level of competition they’ll eventually face in the Region 5A North tournament if they advance past Conference 16 is critical to building a championship-level side in the new state alignment.

After this week, the Patriots have clearly passed the first test. Just a few days after a 0-0 tie with Mountain View, Albemarle edged Potomac Falls 1-0 Friday night in a game that was moved from Northern Virginia to Albemarle because of inclement weather.

Hannah Eiden scored the Patriots’ gamewinner with under 15 minutes to play after gathering a beautiful, pinpoint cross from Katie Schnell. Albemarle’s defense stepped up big in the shuout with Grace Leytham, Raigan Tarkington and Arianna Decorte playing big-time in the back.

The Patriots will return to Jefferson District play when they take on Charlottesville Wednesday at 7 p.m.
