Over the hump

The VISAA quarterfinals have been a bit of a stumbling block for St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls lacrosse since the Saints’ move up to Division I.

This year’s edition of the Saints wasn’t fazed though.

In a rematch with LIS foe Trinity Episcopal Tuesday afternoon, STAB earned an 11-8 victory and a spot in their first VISAA Division I Final Four.

The No. 3 seeded Saints shook off a 5-5 tie at halftime and pulled away for the win with a solid second half, eventually making some headway against No. 6 Trinity’s All-LIS keeper Elicia Wells who finished with 11 saves. Julia Haney and Annie Cory did the bulk of the damage with a hat trick each. Haney also had an assist. McKenzie Maurer stepped up in a big way with two goals for the Saints while Caroline DiGiacomo, Audrey Schreck and Virginia Speidel each checked in with a goal. Speidel and Sadie Bryant posted on assist each.

Schreck gave the Saints a huge boost with a monster day of draw controls, snagging 10 for the game to provide the STAB offense with a lot of chances to score. Cory had three controls on the day.

Freshman keeper Molly Morris had eight saves in the cage for the Saints.

Meredith Hughes led Trinity’s offensive attack with four goals.

STAB will face No. 2-seeded Bishop Ireton Friday in the VISAA Division I semifinals.
