Monticello upends Powhatan

When Monticello’s girls basketball team gets a balanced offensive effort they’re tough to stop. Powhatan found that out Tuesday night and, in the process, the Mustangs cut the Indians’ two-game lead on the rest of the Jefferson District in half with a 60-54 win at Monticello.

“We’ve talked about it and we’ve been in a lot of close games,” said Monticello coach Josh McElheny. “We’ve just said keep believing and you saw it tonight, they believed in everything, especially late.”

Monticello managed to hold off Powhatan down the stretch as both teams went basket for basket in the closing minutes. The Mustangs actually held a 7-point lead going into the final quarter, but a quick spurt from Powhatan cut the lead to two almost immediately.

Bridget Holleran led the way offensively with 20 points but the Indians couldn’t lock in on the Mustangs’ junior guard because her freshmen teammates were also getting the job done. Molly Shepherd had 16 points while Megan Comer came up with 14 points on the night.

A solid performance at the line bolstered the Mustangs’ effort too as Monticello went 21 for 27 at the charity stripe.

Hannah Livermon led Powhatan with 14 points.

The Mustangs will take on Fluvanna County Thursday night in what is increasingly becoming a wild Jefferson District girls race.
