Monticello rolls past Fluvanna

Monticello wasted little time Friday night against Fluvanna County, building a huge lead before halftime en route to a 59-3 victory.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 31-3 lead at the break fueled by touchdowns by four different players, jumpstarted by Griffin Davis’ 2-yard touchdown run with 7:27 left in the first. Jeonte Banks and quarterback Daniel Hummel followed with rushing touchdowns of their own and Hummel then found Anthony Lee for a four-yard touchdown pass. Toss in a Jeanluc Lapierre field goal and it was all Mustangs in the opening two quarters.

While he didn’t score a touchdown, Kyree Koonce was an explosive presence, rushing for 12.7 yards per carry with 114 yards on nine touches, including a 61-yard sprint. He also tacked on a 41-yard catch and run on the night that helped setup Davis’ game-opening touchdown.

The Mustangs’ reserves took over after the break with Lestat Lundy rushing for 97 yards and two touchdowns on five carries while Derek Williams had a big catch for 58 yards from backup quarterback Kevin Jarrell.

Monticello’s defense locked up the Flucos on the ground entirely with Fluvanna managing just negative four yards rushing on the night to Monticello’s 313 yards. The passing game for Fluvanna fared a little better with Gavin Patrick throwing for 163 yards (99 of them to Macen Dahl), but a pair of interceptions by Monticello’s Jeremiah Simms and Michael Crenshaw helped offset those gains.

The Mustangs will now move on to take on Western Albemarle in a cross-county rivalry game, while Fluvanna looks to regroup against Louisa County.
