Monticello boys lacrosse blows out Eastern View

It’s early in the season so it’s awfully nice for Monticello boys lacrosse to already see things clicking — that hasn’t always been the case for the Mustangs in early season clashes.

“Offensively we did everything we needed to do, we capitalized on all their mistakes, man-up, man-down — in all facets of the game I feel like we won,” said Monticello coach Tucker Tapscott. “It’s a testament to the fundamentals we work on every day.”

The Mustangs rolled 20-7 past Eastern View Tuesday night, jumping on the Cyclones with an early onslaught that never really let up.

Monticello built a 16-2 lead by halftime, prompted in large part by Daniel Hummel and Paxton Jolly each notching hat tricks in the first quarter. Hummel, the Mustangs’ longstick midfielder, scored one of those three on a behind-the-back shot, also threw in eight ground balls on the night for good measure.

“Teams need to take notice of Daniel Hummel, he’s really stepping up on every area of the field,” Tapscott said. “I couldn’t be happier, more blessed to coach that young man.”

Jolly, who joined the team after opting to play tennis last season, finished with five goals and an assist. Brian Young and Austin Haverstrom both also had big offensive nights with Young scoring eight points with five assists and a trio of goals while Haverstrom scored four goals and dished out two assists.

Haverstrom kept the Mustangs’ momentum going with a string of faceoff victories, helping lead Monticello to wins on nearly 70 percent of the faceoffs. Haverstrom won 13 faceoffs before the Mustangs started rotating players in as game wore on.

“We’re clicking on all cylinders right now,” Tapscott said.

The Mustangs will travel Wednesday to take on Culpeper at 7 p.m.
