Louisa County runs past Courtland

Louisa County football’s ground attack? As usual, it’s got a rhythm right now.

Friday night the Lions rolled past Courtland 45-20 in large part due to a rushing attack that produced 308 yards and five touchdowns at a clip of 7.2 yards per carry.

Now the 2-0 Lions’ biggest test of the young season looms — a date Friday in The Jungle with Massaponax.

Against the Cougars, Jordan Smith led the ground game with 84 yards as part of his 130 all-purpose yards on the night as he hauled in a 46-yard touchdown from Landon Wilson as well. Smith scored twice on the ground, opening the scoring with a 13-yard touchdown while notching a 60-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Adam Mills had 76 yards on 11 touches and Wilson followed up his four-touchdown, 100+ yard performance on the ground in the season opener with 60 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown. Austin Talley picked up 65 yards on 10 carries as the Lions and Fischer served as the short yardage specialist with two touchdown plunges from two and three yards out. The Lions made every effort to present a balanced, unpredictable rushing attack with a lot of different weapons attacking.

Louisa was also efficient when it did put the ball in the air. Wilson went 6-for-8 for 139 yards and the touchdown to Smith.

Louisa shut out Courtland before the break and the Lions’ defense forced three turnovers, with Wilson picking off two passes in a relatively rare defensive appearance for the signal-caller.

Courtland managed 20 second half points on three touchdowns and finished with 236 yards of total offense, with the bulk of that coming on 171 yards on the ground. Kwame Whitaker scored on two touchdown catches for the Cougars.

Louisa is slated to face Massaponax Friday and the Panthers will come in having lost both of their first two games to other programs (Chancellor and King George) being shutdown due to COVID protocols.
