JD Roundup: Mustangs, Flucos, Warriors and Lions all advance

Monticello handled its business in its Jefferson District home quarterfinal match against visiting Orange County. The Mustangs completed a three match sweep of the Hornets with a 3-0 win, 25-13, 25-13, 25-10.

Senior Kate Geldmacher led the offense with 11 kills, three blocks and a pair of aces. Charlotte Devine and Mariah Williams each had big nights at the service line as they combined for eight aces with an even split of four apiece. Williams also had 23 assists and a pair of blocks, and managed to lead the defense with five digs. Not far behind were Amy Skolnick, Taylor Hopkins and Rianna Jansen who each had four digs.

The win sends the second seeded Mustangs to the second round of the tournament and they will play third seeded Fluvanna County on Tuesday at Charlottesville at 7:30 p.m.

The Flucos punched their ticket to the JD semifinals by topping sixth seed Goochland in four games.

Fluvanna took the first two games of the match with relative ease winning each by double digits. The Bulldogs rallied to force a fourth game with a 25-21 win in game three. However, the Flucos returned to early match form and closed the match out to move on.

Fluvanna and Monticello split their two regular season match ups. The road team took both contests with the Mustangs winning the first meeting in five games and the Flucos returning the favor in a four-game victory. Fluvanna has won their last three JD semifinal matches, but we also the number two seed in all three occasions.

The winner of that match will play the winner of the Western Albemarle and Louisa County semifinal that precedes.

The regular season champs with a Region II bid already in their pocket, the Warriors were able to cruise to a 3-0 win at home in their quarterfinal match against Charlottesville, 25-8, 25-14, 25-9.

Laura Bergin, Allie Nicholson and Alex Gay combined for 26 kills in the win with Bergin netting 12 while Nicholson and Gay each had seven. Junior setter Riley Martin compiled 20 assists and also reached double-digits in digs with 10. Marin Crowder tied Martin for a match high with 10 digs of her own.

Western faces a Lions squad it beat twice in the regular season in three games. The Warriors have won each JD tournament game they’ve played in dating back to 2002.
