Fluvanna sweeps Spotswood

They had to wait a week because of weather, but they’ll head into Jefferson District play with a rhythm. Coming off a 1-0 win over Spotswood earlier in the day, the Fluvanna County softball team picked up a double header sweep of the Blazers with an emphatic 18-0 five inning victory on Tuesday night.

“We were a little slow offensively in that first game, but with these girls confidence is huge and it only takes them one inning to get rolling,” said Fluvanna coach Aimee McCall. “They looked good and faced three different pitchers and hit each one. So they should be confident at this point.”

The Flucos came crashing through the gate in the first inning of game two. Getting off to a 6-0 start, Fluvanna took advantage of four walks and was paced by a 3-run double from Taylor Beck and an RBI single from Elizabeth Kidd.

Then in the third the Flucos made it 7-0 on a sacrifice fly from Beck, before launching another scoring spree in the fourth. The 7-run rally in the fourth was highlighted by a 3-run double from Michelle Herndon. Up 10-0, the Flucos showed their sportsmanship, keeping the next slew of hits down to singles and only allowing their runners advance one base each at bat.

“Sometimes you get up there a little bit nervous, but when everyone is hitting it really is contagious,” Herndon said. “Everyone gets fired up and wants to keep hitting.”

Up 14-0, the Fluvanna bench came in fifth and provided a 4-run rally and Fluvana defense finished the job in the bottom half of the inning to wrap up the slaughter rule win.

Pitcher Allison Smith picked up the complete game win and gave up just one walk and one hit. Fluvanna’s defense allowed just three base errors the entire game, committing one error along the way.

Offensively four different players had multiple hits in the win. Herndon went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a single, a walk and three RBI and four runs scored. Beck finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored. Ashleigh Harris was 4 for 5 with two runs scored. Amber Dillow was 3 for 5 with two runs scored also.

Fluvanna (5-2) hosts Charlottesville on Monday at 7 p.m.
