Defense powers Blue Ridge basketball to VIC championship game

In its last three games, Blue Ridge’s boys basketball team has surrendered no more than 41 points.

It’s safe to say the Barons’ defense is simply suffocating right now.

Blue Ridge held Hargrave in check Thursday night in the VIC semifinals, winning 59-36 to earn a return trip to the VIC title game to face Virginia Episcopal. The Barons lost to Miller in dramatic fashion in the conference title game last year.

Michael Gray and Chris Rogers provided the offense to make sure that defensive effort held up, with both players finishing with 18 points including four 3-pointers a piece. Gray also led the Barons on the boards with eight rebounds while Rogers just missed a double double of his own with nine assists on the night. Perhaps more impressively, Rogers turned the ball over just once.

Blue Ridge forced 10 steals as a team with Rogers coming up with four of them while Gray had two. Houston Emory and Sasha Glushkov each had two blocks for Blue Ridge. Jaden Frazier and Andy Nwaoko pulled down five boards each.

Ernesto Torres chipped in eight points on the night, knocking down two 3-pointers.

Blue Ridge’s lone VIC loss came at the hands of the Bishops back in January, but the Barons avenged that loss on February 6 with a 55-41 win at home.

They’ll face VES at 5:15 p.m. at Roanoke College.
