Covenant tennis rolls Western

The Friday night match between Western Albemarle and Covenant’s boys tennis team looked like a big-time tilt between the area’s top public and private school programs.

The Eagles have five straight VISAA Division II titles and Western isn’t far off that in VHSL’s Group AA, winning four of the last six state titles.

Instead, Friday’s match just served to illustrate how dominant this year’s edition of Covenant’s perennial title winners can be against top-flight competition.

The Eagles rolled 8-1 over the Warriors, with Western’s Patrick Hicks and Scott Grover winning at No. 3 doubles.

Outside of that, it was all Covenant. No. 1 Jack Thomas won 10-3 over the lone returning starter from Western’s 2012 champion squad, Timmy O’Shea.

Western’s No. 2 Tucker Ottoway, gave his Covenant counterpart the toughest match, with William Rose managing a 10-8 victory. His brother Matthew Rose beat Joe Squillace 10-2 at the No. 3. Covenant’s Sam Adamson beat Scott Grover at No. 5. Adamson, who played at No. 2 last year for the Eagles, is an illustration of the depth that Covenant possesses, as he’s almost surely the most talented No. 4 in the area. Kevin Coleman and Roger Wang at No. 5 and No. 6 closed out the singles sweep by the Eagles, with Wang rolling 10-0.

Covenant jumps into Virginia Independent Conference tournament play next week while Western continues the second half of Jefferson District play with a home match Tuesday against Monticello at 5:30 p.m.
