Covenant restructures

As a result of a restructuring of the Covenant School’s athletic department, the school’s football head coaching position is going to open up.

Dave Rocco, who served as the assistant athletic director since he was hired before the 2011 season, will move on at the end of the school year as the Eagles transition to a two-person team running the athletic office with athletic director Brooks Berry and athletic secretary Debra Douglas handling the department’s operations going forward.

The assistant athletic director role will become a full-time athletic facilities groundskeeper who will manage the facility 12 months per year and will be aligned with Covenant’s facilities department.

“Due to the restructuring, the full-time Assistant Athletic Director position will no longer exist,” Berry wrote in an email addressed to the Covenant community. “This has been a very difficult process as Coach Rocco has served Covenant faithfully in the Assistant Athletic Director’s role this year.”

Rocco will remain at the school in the assistant athletic director role through the end of the 2013-2014 school year.

Rocco stabilized an Eagles football program that hit a rough patch with three different head coaches in the wake of Mark Sanford’s departure to take over William Monroe’s program. Rocco’s time at Covenant included the program’s first ever win over St. Anne’s-Belfield a year ago in 2012.

“We are grateful for coach Rocco’s service and leadership to the Covenant School for the past three years and are thankful for Dave’s commitment to our student athletes,” Berry continued in the email.

Rocco previously served as the head coach at Staunton River and as an assistant at Jefferson Forest before landing the Covenant job.

Berry explains that assistant coach Dave Hart will serve as the interim head coach as the school begins “the search for a new head and coach and transition into the 2014 season.”
