Covenant girls lacrosse blows past Charlottesville

Like any team early in the season, Covenant’s girls lacrosse team was in need of a little jolt, and Tuesday afternoon the Eagles got it in a 12-3 victory over Charlottesville.

“It boosts our morale majorly,” Covenant coach Brittany Vogt said. “They went after every ball and didn’t let up the entire game.”

The Eagles built an 8-1 halftime lead and then looked to possess the ball after the break. Maysn Whitten and Lizzy Shim each led Covenant with four goals while senior Liz Llera put together a hat trick. Megan McGlothlin rounded out the scoring with a goal. Whitten was particularly effecient, needing just five shots to score her four goals. Shim added a pair of assists in a particularly strong effort for the Eagles.

Covenant is putting together the pieces with a lot of new faces in key spots, though holdovers like Llera and Shim, a field hockey star,  give the Eagles some  scoring punch.

“They’re adjusting really well, we have players who have never played the sport before and we have girls who are looking to play in college,”  Vogt said. “They’re just meshing really well.”

Charlottesville got a trio of goals from and a solid performance from first-year keeper Daeja Wade in the cage as she absorbed a barrage of shots from the Eagles.

“The girls are coming together as a team really quickly,” said Charlottesville’s first-year head coach Kim Parsons. “They’re adjusting to us switching them up and moving them all around. We’re trying to figure out what’s the best fit for each person in each position based on our team’s needs. We’re really excited about this season.”

The Black Knights will host Monticello Friday as they open up district play while Covenant takes on St. Gertrude on the road Monday.
