Covenant boys lacrosse cruises past Christchurch

Covenant’s boys lacrosse team got cranking early Thursday afternoon and never slowed down, rolling 17-2 over Christchurch.

“That’s the highest level of play we’ve shown so far this year,” said Covenant coach Clay Tharrington. “This week was kind of an up and down week for us … but everybody stepped up today.”

Four Eagles players notched hat tricks as Covenant continues to showcase some serious offensive depth that makes them particularly tough to contain.

“We’ve had some injuries, kids getting back in the lineup for us like Seth Nichols getting back in today,” Tharrington said. “The plan was to only play him a little but he looked great today. He plays midfield but we showed him at attack a little. We’ve really got nine guys that can kind of play any offensive position.”

Nichols didn’t score as he got back into the flow, but the rest of the offense did, with Clark Gathright scoring four goals while Oakleigh Archer, Savraj Moore and Michael Colberg scored three each. Colberg also dished out three assists and picked up three ground balls.

Craig Van Dyke had a goal and an assist to go with three ground balls and Gathright also picked up three loose balls. Quinn Garland’s two goals and Luke Sorenson’s tally rounded out the Covenant offense. That’s seven different scorers with Nichols just getting back up to speed

Josh Klein led the Eagles with nine ground balls.

The Eagles’ defense locked down Christchurch throughout, with Austin Hall registering 11 saves on the day.

The victory pushes the Eagles to 5-0 on the year, and they now enter one of the toughest stretches of their schedule as they go back-to-back-to-back with Highland, Virginia Episcopal and Blue Ridge Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
