Bounce back

That’s how you bounce back from a season opening loss.

A week after a turnover-filled performance weighed down Louisa en route to a loss to Eastern View at home, Louisa County took its frustration out on archrival Orange County. The Lions rolled 48-0, holding a 28-0 lead at the break in a rare blowout in the rivalry contest.

Louisa quarterback Zack Jackson did most of the damage with a stat-sheet filling performance. He went a perfect 5 for 5 through the air for 137 yards and two touchdowns while piling up another 107 yards on the ground for two more touchdowns. Jackson then turned around on defense and led the Lions on that side of the ball as well with a team-high six tackles and 2.5 sacks, coming up with three total tackles for a loss. For good measure, he also picked off a pass.

He had help too, with Deion Johnson scored a touchdown on the ground and another on a pass from Jackson. Johnson scored on two of his five touches for an explosive night, finishing with 28 yards receiving and 22 yards on the ground. Trey Cherry hauled in a 56-yard catch from Jackson too, while Markel Groomes and Raqeli Carter had 40 and 49 yards rushing each on limited carries.

Louisa’s defense as a whole was nearly flawless, putting the clamps on Orange’s offense that finished with just 31 yards of total offense and just four first downs. The Lions bottled up Orange running back Isaiah Ferguson who had 33 yards on the ground while also shutting down Orange’s passing options behind quarterbacks Garret Johnson and Damian Clark. Clark and Johnson combined for just 25 yards through the air.

Louisa heads to Courtland for another road clash next week while Orange goes toe-to-toe with Culpeper in its final non-district contest looking to pick up the Hornets’ first win of the season.
