Black Knights pick up win

It took two tremendous efforts to get their goals, but Charlottesville’s girls soccer team picked up a big 2-0 win over Fluvanna County at home Thursday night.

Morgan Symmers has anchored the Flucos the last four years at keeper, and she can make life extremely tough on the opposition, which is why the Black Knights had to really work for their two goals.

“We knew that this was going to be a tough game coming into it so we definitely had to play together,” said Charlottesville’s Bri Jordan. “She’s an amazing goalie, we’ve been going against her for four years now.”

Jordan was the first to solve Symmers with a first half goal, battling past some solid defense for the tally.

“It was definitely one of the best goals I’ve had since I had a defender on my side and the goalie coming at me,” Jordan said. “It was an electric goal.”

From there the Black Knights went to work on trying to control possessions and limit the chances the Flucos got to test Black Knights keeper Genvieve Riley. With Fluvanna forced to pack it in and play largely in their own half, Charlottesville’s midfield had to be on point.

“It’s so much tougher (when a team packs it in),” Jordan said. “That’s when our midfield become a big part of the game.”

The Black Knights put the game a little more out of reach with just under 30 minutes to play when Cam Ciambotti unleashed a laser to the top left corner of the goal, pushing the lead to 2-0. Fluvanna couldn’t counter either goal, in part because of the Black Knights’ tough midfield, and in part because the Flucos are still trying to find their stride.

“I actually have a lot of talented players, and there’s a good mix of new and old,” said Fluvanna coach Kristin Davis. “We’re just trying to find the cohesion that we need to play our best instead of just reacting to what we’re seeing on the field.”

Between Symmers and speedy Cyan Coates on defense, the Flucos have a solid core to build around. Making all those pieces work is the next step.

“We’ve put in some other puzzle pieces and we haven’t quite gotten that kind of ‘without-thinking’ kind of connectivity back there,” Davis said.

The Black Knights will host Harrisonburg Tuesday night while Fluvanna takes a week off for spring break before returning to take on Orange County.
