Back On Track: Albemarle boys basketball beats Stafford in Region 5D quarters

Albemarle boys basketball needed to reset itself after falling to William Fleming Monday night in subregional play. The Patriots got it done and they didn’t wait until game time on Wednesday to make it happen.

“Yesterday when we came in we had to have a good practice and it was one of our best practices, especially this postseason,” said Albemarle’s Carter Wesson.

That work showed Wednesday night in the Region 5D quarterfinals as Albemarle beat Stafford 65-51 with Wesson putting up 25 points while Christian Humes rang up 20 to ignite the Patriots’ offense.

Albemarle put together a huge second quarter to turn a two-point deficit at the end of the first quarter into a 35-28 halftime lead. Wesson hit a pair of threes during that frame and finished with 10 total points in the second while Humes also got going, scoring eight. The Patriots kept pulling away from there, with an emphatic Carter Wesson dunk in the fourth quarter off a Jason Breen outlet providing an exclamation mark on the win.

When the Patriots can get the game to their pace, they’re pretty tough to beat because of their speed, quickness and ability to make plays in transition.

“We’ve just got to keep the ball moving and run through out offense,” Wesson said. “We did that well tonight, we played as a team and really got it moving.”

Wesson also had four rebounds while Humes finished with four assists to go with his 20 points. La’mari Parler had 10 points and four assists. Breen had a big night on the boards with 10 rebounds to go with six points, four assists and four steals.

The Patriots head to Potomac Falls Friday with a state tournament berth on the line in the Region 5D semifinals.
