Albemarle earns state berth

Albemarle girls lacrosse took a big leap forward in 2012, and the Patriots are keeping it going after knocking off Salem 15-11 in the West Central section semifinals Friday afternoon.

The Patriots earned a state tournament berth with the victory and will face archrival Western Albemarle in the section final Monday at 7 p.m.

As usual, Connor Carson led the way for the Patriots offensively with six goals and three assists. Rebecca Mendelsohn notched three goals and three assists for Albemarle in the winning effort.

Kristen Mendelsohn finished with a goal and three assists. Kristen Smith and Ryann Murray had two goals each for the Patriots to round out the bulk of the scoring.

Kelsey Rund stood tall in the cage with 13 saves for the Patriots.

Cate Pace and Morgan Leeson put together a hat trick each for Salem.

Albemarle is now 16-2 and will face the Warriors Monday before moving on to the state quarterfinals.
