A look inside CATEC’s Building Trades Program

Building Trades and Electrical is a bedrock program at the Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center, where students can learn the basic skills of the the building industry ranging from carpentry, residential wiring, residential plumbing, and masonry.

Students currently in the program in 2016-2017 are building an actual home on the school property, completing everything from framing to wiring to roofing.

Students learn from the ground up, starting with how to read blueprints and drawings early in the year before advancing on to the build out, with a focus on carpentry toward the end of the one-year program in Building Trades I & II.

In the Electrical I & II program, students learn the range of electrical install, operation and maintenance in residential, commercial and industrial settings.

In both programs, students can earn a wealth of certifications and even dual enrollment credit at PVCC by passing tests and completing curriculum, giving them a big leg up if they choose to enter the construction market after graduation. Completing the Electrical program may even allow a student to qualify for one year of Apprenticeship credit with the Department of Labor.

Sydney Trimmer, the building trades instructor brings 30 years of experience as an electrical and building trades teacher in Stafford and Greene counties to the table.
