Woodberry wins VISAA indoor track title

Woodberry Forest cruised to a VISAA indoor state track championship Saturday with the Tigers exploding for 169.5 points to more than double second place Fork Union’s output in Richmond.

Woodberry’s Eric Ways, who also officially signed with Notre Dame for track Saturday, earned runner of the meet honors with a pair of state titles in the 300-meter dash and the 500-meter dash. He also snagged a third place in the 55-meter, showing incredible range throughout the performance.

But the Tigers were far from a one-man show as 18 other Woodberry athletes scored points individually. The Tigers also won the 4×200 relay, took second in the 4×400 and a fifth place in the 4×800.

Michael Davenport put in a solid outing for champions with a second place in the 55-meter and a third in the 300. Christian Asher bolstered the Tigers’ 55-meter dominance with a fifth place finish.

H.T. Minor took fifth in the 300 as Woodberry wrapped up three of the top five spots in that race.

Josh Hillary won the 55-hurdles and took second in the high jump. Robert Singleton had a pair of top five finishes in the 1600 and 3200-meter races.

The Tigers also took three of the top five slots in the pole vault and shot put, with Joseph Seo winning the pole vault title while David Seo and Ben Foley took fifth. In the shot, Brady Logan, Andrew Shofner and Spencer Bibb went 2-4-5 respectively.

Ryan Grady was the runner-up in the triple jump for Woodberry while Church Humphreys took fifth.

Fork Union put together a respectable effort to take second behind the Tigers’ deep squad, producing two state championships on the day. Alex Lomong had a hand in both of them, winning the 1000-meter title on his own and running a leg of the title winning 4×400 team. His runner-up performance in 500-meter race gave him a huge day in the points.

Lomong’s brother Peter took second in the 1000-meter, fifth in the 1600-meter and ran a leg on the 4×400 team. Jim Squatriglia and Marc Uptegraff gave FUMA a strong performance in the shot, taking third and sixth respectively.

O’Neil Combs placed third in the long jump for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils also took fourth in the 4×200 relay.
