Woodberry lacrosse holds off Flint Hill

It wasn’t pretty, but Woodberry Forest managed to hold off an upset bid by unranked Flint Hill Monday, edging out to a 7-5 victory with a dominating second half by the Tigers’ defense who held Flint Hill scoreless after the break.

The game see-sawed back and forth throughout the first half, with Woodberry eventually taking a 4-2 lead, but Flint Hill bounced back with three goals, two of them from Nick Peterson, to take a brief 5-4 lead. An unassisted goal from Todd Fedyck evened the game at 5-5 before the half.

In the second half, the Tigers’ defense clamped down and Fedyck had a pair of assists on goals by Whit Hobbs and Nick Bierman. The second half shutout put away the Flint Hill upset bid.

James Hewell had two goals and two assists in the first half. Jack Whitworth had two goals and an assist before the break. Bierman had an assist as well.

Wylie Mendicino held a narrow edge on the faceoff for the Tigers, winning nine of 16 chances. Taulford Wharton posted a 10-save game in the cage.

Woodberry hits the road for a challenging matchup Friday against Paul VI, a squad lurking in the VISAA Division I poll just behind No. 5 Woodberry in the sixth slot.
