Woodberry lacrosse accelerates past Blue Ridge

Woodberry Forest surrendered one goal to Blue Ridge to open Tuesday’s clash in the snow, but after that it was all Tigers as Woodberry rolled to an 18-8 victory over the Barons.

Jack Whitworth and Patrick Shea paced the Tigers with four goals each while Todd Fedyck noted a hat trick of his own while also dishing out two assists.

After Dima Ferreira scored for Blue Ridge in the first quarter, Woodberry reeled off five goals in the frame by Fedyck (twice), Tiger Ripley and Whitworth (twice) to take a 5-1 lead. By halftime, the advantage was 11-2 as Woodberry just kept pulling away.

Ripley and James Hewell each finished with two goals and two assists to bolster the Tigers’ offense.

Woodberry’s work on the faceoff was a key part of that halftime advantage with Wylie Mendicino’s 16 faceoff wins on 19 chances leading the way for Woodberry for the game. Fedyck and Noah Hollander also got in on the act with seven wins between them on nine opportunities.

The Tigers kept the pedal down in the third quarter too and led the Barons 17-2 after three quarters.

Woodberry keeper Talfourd Wharton had four saves on the day including a pair of big first half stops.

Ferreira finished with Blue Ridge’s lone two goals in the first half.

The Tigers host Potomac School at 2 p.m. Saturday while the Barons will try and bounce back Friday on the road against Covenant at 4:30 p.m.
