Western sweeps Region II swim titles

For the second week in a row, the Western Albemarle boys and girls swim and dive teams went home with titles.

The Warriors swept the Region II swim and dive meet Saturday at Fork Union, with the girls rolling 144-66 over second place Dominion High while the boys held off Potomac Falls 87-71.

The Western girls dominance came largely on a sweep of the relays as the Warriors won the 200-medley, 200-free and 400-free relay races, that 54 point total alone would’ve put the Warriors in fifth. But Western didn’t stop with the relay wins. Remedy Rule continued what’s already a storied high school career with another double individual win as the sophomore won the 200-IM and 100-backstroke. She also swam legs on the 200-medley and 400-free relays.

Western also got a wins from Brazil Rule in the 200-free. She also took second in the 100-free, where Elsa Strickland and Julia Elder placed sixth and seventh. Lexi Campbell picked up a third place in the 50-free while Brynn Acker finished fifth in the 400-free and Madison Tegen took seventh. Tegen also finished sixth in the 200-free. Colleen Higgins and Campbell finished fifth and sixth in 100-breast.

The Western boys turned to Alex Rayle to carry the load as they’ve done the last few years and Rayle delivered with a win in the 200-IM and another in the 100-back.

Danny O’Dea also had a big day for the Warriors, winning the 100-free and placing third in the 100-back. Max Tempkin took fourth in the 100-fly and Morgan McKeen finished fifth in the 100-breast.

The Warriors’ relay teams bolstered the effort with a win in the 200-medley relay, a third in the 200-free relay and a fourth in the 400-free relay.

Western’s squads were far from the only local teams with strong performances in the Region II meet. Monticello’s boys took fourth as a team while Charlottesville’s girls took fifth.

Monticello’s 200-medley relay team took third while the 200-free relay squad finished fourth. Ryan Mitchell had a big individual meet with a third in the 200-free and a fourth in the 100-breast. Miles Rodi took third for the Mustangs in the 400-free.

The Charlottesville girls rolled to a fourth place finish in the 200-free relay while standout freestyler Storrs Lamb won the 50-free and 100-free to pick up a double title for the Black Knights.
