Western hockey shuts out Powhatan

Western Albemarle’s field hockey team celebrated its seniors before Tuesday’s clash with Powhatan, and then two of them scored goals to lift the Warriors to a 3-0 victory over the Indians.

“There were more emotions because it’s our last home game together but we’re really excited — we’re going to have a long season,” said senior Olivia Markopoulos. “It’s going to be awesome.”

Markopoulos scored in the first half and fellow senior Hannah Plantz scored in the second half, with Madison Masloff scoring the Warriors’ other goal in the first half.

“I thought it was really awesome that everyone got to play and we ended on such a high note,” said Western junior Valerie Hajek. “When we played Powhatan last time we only won 1-0 so I wasn’t sure how this game was going to go but I’m really happy with the outcome.”

Western struggled for a while to breakthrough for a goal early, but eventually got into gear and built a 2-0 lead at the break.

“We started off really flat and we took a timeout and really got our heads into it,” Markopoulos said. “We definitely picked it up from there

The Warriors remained unbeaten in the district with the victory, completing a particularly early senior night because of the way the schedule fell.

“We definitely weren’t prepared to think about our last home game this early but it was a good win,” Markopoulos said.

With that senior night emotion out the way now, Western can focus on a strong finish to the rest of the season. The Warriors have four road games coming up next week to close out Jefferson District play.
