Western Albemarle’s girls tennis squad isn’t showing any signs of slowing down yet.
The Warriors rolled 5-1 Friday in the Region II championship, smashing traditional region foe John Handley in the easy victory.
Stephanie Barton had the biggest day for the Warriors, winning at No. 6 singles and then again at No. 3 doubles. Western had to get it done in doubles as Claire Park’s match at No. 4 singles kept rolling with the Warriors only up 4-1 with the completion of the other singles clashes.
Barton combined with Sadie Gupton at No. 3 doubles to roll 6-4, 6-3.
Emily Kochard rallied from a 6-4 first set loss at the top of the ladder to win the final two sets 6-1, 6-1 and pick up a critical point. Fran Clifton and Lauren Kearns also closed out victories, with Kearns rolling 6-1, 6-3.
The Warriors advance to the VHSL Group AA quarterfinals. They’ll host a quarterfinal match June 4 at Western Albemarle.
