Western girls tennis wins another JD title

Western Albemarle’s girls tennis team has done it again.

The Warriors picked up a 6-2 win over Monticello Friday to earn yet another Jefferson District title for the squad as Western ran their Jefferson District record to 10-0 in the regular season.

Emily Kochard’s 10-8 win at No. 1 gave the Warriors a huge boost and Claire Park, Lauren Kearns and Stephanie Barton snagged wins at four, five and six to give Western four wins. But Monticello refused to go quietly as Grace Simpson put together a 10-4 win at No. 2 singles and Jenna Pierides won at No. 3.

Holding the 4-2 advantage, Kochard and Ix won at No. 1 doubles and Barton and Kearns combined to win at No. 3, sealing up the win.

“This was a great match tonight between two strong teams,” Western coach Ellen Markowitz said via email. “Monticello played tough. Grace played flawlessly, some of her best tennis to beat Maddy. The singles were very close tonight. Emily gave the team a huge lift with her victory over Kassie, that was a classic match.”

Both squads will enter Jefferson District tournament play next week.
