Western’s girls tennis team put together a strong performance Saturday to beat Handley High.

Maddy Ix’s win at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-0, 6-1 was particularly big for the Warriors against the Judges. 

The Warriors picked up a 7-2 victory to move to 10-0 on the year.

Western Albemarle’s girls tennis team made a Saturday trip north to take on Handley’s squad and the Warriors left with a season-opening victory against a rock solid program that should give them an early season boost.

“It was a great match today with Handley,” Western coach Ellen Markowitz said via email. “They always bring out the best in us and we love playing them. There were a lot of close singles matches that could have gone either way.”

Western swept the top three spots in the ladder, with No. 1 Emily Kochard, No. 2 Maddy Ix and No. 3 Lauren Kearns picking up victories. Freshman Rosy Ix then snagged a win at No. 6 that gave the Warriors a 4-2 lead after singles. Western swept the doubles portion of the match.
