Western girls tennis advances past Monticello

Western Albemarle girls tennis’ Stephanie Barton stumbled a little out of the gate in Wednesday’s Conference 29 semifinals, dropping her first set to Monticello’s No. 2 Zimako Chuks.
While this was the third time the Warriors played Monticello this year, it was the first time Barton and Chuks had faced off.
“I just settled in and played differently — I tried to hit the corners (a spot inside the normal white lines) and not the lines,” Barton said. “That really helped me.”
Barton adjusted well, rebounding from that first set loss to win the next two and close out the match for the Warriors 5-0.
“I looked around and made sure my teammates had my back in case I didn’t have it, but I was able to pull it out and it was really exciting to be the one to finish it after having such a rough start,” Barton said.
With the victory, Western (18-0) advances to the Conference finals and locks up a Region 3A West tournament berth. The Conference final is Thursday at Western at 5 p.m.
