Western girls soccer picks up win over Fluvanna

By Bryan Rothamel of Flucoblog.com

Western Albemarle finally had a game go their way. The teams has more ties than they care to think about and only a handful of wins to their name. Thursday night in Fluvanna did the trick as the Warriors defeated the Flucos 3-0.

“We’ve had a hard time getting the ball into the goal and really working on our offense,” said Western’s LP Desch. “That was our key focus for this game was to make sure we finished on our opportunities and got in as many goals as we possibly could.”

“I think we were really motivated to score,” teammate Julie Nolet added. “We wanted this really bad.”

The Warriors first got on the board in the 26th minute with Nolet scoring on a missed shot from teammate Sara Nieberg. In the 51st minute, Desch joined in with a tricky free-kick from just outside the penalty box.

With the Fluco defenders aligned in a wall, she snuck it under them as they all anticipated the ball and jumped. Nolet added another one with less than two minutes in the match.

Fluvanna had chances they couldn’t covert on and the four saves from Western’s Lexie Eckerle didn’t hurt.

“We rushed too many passes, we missed too many opportunities,” Fluvanna head coach Tara Garcia said. “We missed six opportunities in the first half. You can’t miss opportunities like that.”
