Western girls soccer falls in region final

Augusta Peds

Western Albemarle’s girls soccer team knew it faced a tall task going into the Region 3A West final against Blacksburg, and the Bruins met expectations while picking up a 2-0 victory and the region championship.
Jessie Wollman scored both goals for Blacksburg, connecting twice in the second half after the game was deadlocked 0-0 at the break. She scored quickly too, notching her first goal in the fifth minute of the second half and the backbreaker in the ninth minute.
The Bruins held a 10-3 advantage on shots, one of the few times this year that Western has been outshot.
By virtue of being a region finalist, the Warriors advance to the state semifinals at Liberty University in Lynchburg next Friday and according to the VHSL website, the 3A West runner-up plays in the 10 a.m. semifinal, where they’ll face the 3A East champion John Champe, who beat Brentsville 2-1 in the region title game.
