Western girls soccer blows past Cave Spring

Game in and game out of late, Western Albemarle’s girls soccer team seems to have some new name step in and make a big play or score a goal.
Monday night it was Ava Coles, who scored a goal in the first half that got the ball rolling for Western and loosened up the Cave Spring defense as the Warriors rolled to a 5-0 victory in the Region 3A West quarterfinals. Five different players including Coles scored for Western in the victory.
“They’re playing with confidence,” said Western coach Jacob Desch. “It’s the playoffs, and they’re stepping up and they’re being unselfish about it.”
Shannon Moore scored in the second off a header on a corner kick and things really started to open up after that as Cave Spring had no choice but to push forward and attack while facing a two-goal deficit and potential elimination.
“We did a great job with high pressure all game long especially in the second half and then we were able to get the ball out wide and expose the flanks,” Desch said. “That opened up some opportunities for us.”
Jane Romness, Caitlin Harvey and Genna Repich scored the next three goals, with Harvey, Emma Ratcliffe and Coles registering assists. On the goals, that’s a sophomore, three freshmen and one senior scoring for the Warriors as Western continues to flash impressive balance.
Western moves on to the region semifinals. They’ll play Wednesday with time and opponent to be announced.
