Western girls lacrosse tops Monticello

Monticello High’s girls lacrosse team is certainly on the rise—the Mustangs only trailed by just two goals early in the second half to a red-hot Western Albemarle.

But when the Warriors kicked into high gear, it was clear there’s still some seperation between Western and the rest of the district.

The Warriors reeled off an eight-goal run through the final quarter and a half for a 14-5 victory over the Mustangs.

Three players knocked in hat tricks for the Warriors, with Abby Wheeler leading the way with seven points including six goals. Ellen Shaffrey had four goals and an assist while Jeanette Fellows had three goals and a helper.

Kellen Haley and Stewart Summers rounded out the scoring with a goal and an assist respectively. Shaffrey also came up with four ground balls to lead the Warriors in that category as well.

Christine Fortner locked down the Mustangs for much of the second half, and the keeper finished with nine saves on the night.

Jessie Valentic led Monticello with a pair of goals and Brianna Slate had a goal and an assist. Anna Bagley and Katelin Cosner each had a goal.
