Western girls lacrosse pushes past Mills Godwin

A strong second half defensive effort sparked Western Albemarle Monday night on the road in the West Central Section final, with a 14-10 victory over Mills Godwin.

The Warriors were tied with Godwin 7-7 at the break, but Western went on a 4-1 run to start the second half. Western grabbed the first five draw controls of the second half, changing the complexion of the game. Alora Henry put the clamps on Godwin’s leading scorer Melissa Gerndt after the break, holding her scoreless in the final half.

That effort allowed Western hold on from there.

Peyton Brandt rang up five goal and an assist for the Warriors while Bridget Shaffrey notched a hat trick to go with an assist of her on. Shaffrey also hauled in five draws.

Mady Baker had a goal and an assist on the night.

Western now sits at 9-5 and will play Patrick Henry, who beat Monticello, in the section tournament semifinals later this week
