Western girls lacrosse beats MHS, advances to group final

Western Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team didn’t waste much time Tuesday night in the Charlottesville Group semifinals. The Warriors leapt out to a five-goal lead before halftime and rolled 18-9 over the Mustangs.

The Warriors’ offensive effort was balanced as seven different Warriors totaled multiple goals. Faris Wallenborn’s four-goal, two-assist night set the pace while Ellie Allen, Sammie Magargee, Alison Berg, Hannah Schuler, Reilly Funk and Julia Wood each finished with two goals.

Berg also dished out three assists and Magargee, Allen and Funk had one assist a piece. Western keeper Hamilton Ibbeken had 14 saves against the Mustangs.

While Western led comfortably at the break, they had trouble throughout containing Bailey Mincer and Summer Larese. The Mustangs’ tandem combined for eight goals with four each and seven draw controls with Larese pulling in five of her own.

Monticello keeper Carly Harris absorbed a barrage of Western shots and came up with 12 saves.

The Warriors (10-4) will face Albemarle in the Charlottesville Group final Friday night at 6 p.m.
