Western girls fall to Liberty Christian

Western Albemarle’s girls squad played well for three quarters, but a rough and tumble fourth sunk the Warriors in the Daily Progress/NBC29 Holiday Classic’s third place game on the girls side.

Liberty Christian, coming off a four-overtime battle with Waynesboro, turned it on in the final frame and turned a three-point deficit into a 60-52 victory.

Western led by four at 48-44, before a 16-4 LCA run ended the contest.

Courtney Powell led LCA with 17 points, including an 8-for-9 night at the line while Claire Thompson scored 11 including three 3-pointers.

Ellen Shaffrey paced the Warriors with 14 points. Virginia Carew and Raven Ward each knocked home eight while Carolyn Schneller and Erin Steva had six points apiece.

LCA attempted 28 free throws while Western got just seven attempts at the line.

The Warriors take on Orange County on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m.
