Western girls explode past Monticello

Western Albemarle had to wait until Friday night to play Monticello in a rematch of the 2010 Region II final after inclement weather postponed Tuesday’s schedule contest, but Ellen Shaffrey made sure it was worth the wait for the Warriors.

Shaffrey, who’s put up several big time performances this season, poured in nine goals, came up with nine draw controls and distributed three assists in Western’s 20-9 victory Friday night.

The Warriors jumped out a 13-4 halftime lead and barely slowed after the break as Anna Liebowitz set the table throughout the game for Western with seven assists. Liebowitz also posted her own hat trick. Jeanette Fellows finished with four goals of her own to round out the bulk of the Western scoring.

Western’s defense kept the Mustangs out of sync on offense, taking dynamic scorer Ari Slate, primarily marked by Alora Henry, largely out of the equation. While Jessie Valentic and Brittany Haun had four and three goals each and Sydney Larese scored twice, Monticello couldn’t match Western’s firepower.

After surrendering the game’s opening goal, Western went on a 3-0 spurt and never relinquished the advantage.

Western travels to Salem Wednesday night while Monticello travels to Charlottesville Tuesday.
