Western girls basketball edges Harrisonburg

Western Albemarle’s girls basketball team unleashed a new lineup Tuesday night after losing a slew of seniors to graduation after a run to the Group AA semifinals last season.

But the result was much the same as last year’s squad.

Western picked up a 54-51 victory over Harrisonburg with 6-foot-1 Bridget Shaffrey leading the way with a monster double double of 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the win. If Shaffrey’s emergence continues, it’ll go a long way toward bolstering a frontcourt hit particularly hard by graduation.

Kathryn Crickenberger added 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals to the effort. Sydney Fewell and Mady Baker each had seven points and Emily Marbury chipped in six of her own. Senior Alora Henry recorded a balanced night with two points, four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.

The Warriors host Chancellor on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Western Albemarle Tip-Off Tournament. R.E. Lee and Miller face off at 6 p.m. in the first game.
