Western girls and boys lacrosse each pick up wins over Salem

The Western Albemarle boys lacrosse team was able to outlast last year’s Jefferson District regular season champion, Salem, by a score of 8-6.

After going up by a pair of goals in the first quarter, the Warriors − last season’s JD tourney title winners −  were deadlocked with at four goals with the Spartans heading into halftime. But Western was able to win the second half, as Ben Carew stood tall in net and the Western offense was able outscore Salem 4-2.

Turner Whitworth had a pair of goals and assists in the outing for Western. Teammate Christophe Drapans also put in two goals. Tyler Ward, Dom Losco, Reid White and Abbot Wallenborn accounted for the other four. Carew finished the game with 11 saves.

Western (2-0, 1-0) will jump back out of district play when they host rival St. Anne’s-Belfield on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Wheeler scores six goals as girls cruise on road

The Western girls had little trouble with Salem on Saturday morning as they jumped out to a giant lead early and held strong in the second half of its 16-3 win.

The Warriors dominated the first half as they outscored the Sparatans 11-0 and their defense held Salem a goal for the first 35 minutes of play.

Senior Abby Wheeler went off for six goals while Jordan Haws and Anna Liebowitz also finished with hattricks and an assist each. Liebowitz also had a big game on the draw as she had five of the Warriors 18 draw controls.

Western tallied 38 shots while their defense held Salem to just eight.

Goalkeeper Christine Fortner stopped four of the six shots she faced and contributed a pair of interceptions.

The Warriors (3-1, 1-0) will host St. Catherine’s on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
