Western Albemarle girls set the stage

Now the stage is set.

“We’ve won eight of our last 10 games,” said Western Albemarle coach Kris Wright. “We’ve been working all year to continue to improve and to put ourselves in position to be in contention for things when late January and February get here. That’s what we’ve done and now we’re in position to play for some things as the rest of the season plays out.”

With a 41-29 victory over Fluvanna Tuesday, Western Albemarle’s girls basketball team will now play for a share of the Jefferson District crown against archrival Monticello Thursday. The Mustangs are currently unbeaten in the Jefferson, including a critical victory over Western in the first half of JD play.

The Warriors could force a tie with a victory in Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. clash at Monticello.

A perfect night at the free throw line by Emily Marbury led the way for the Warriors. The senior point guard finished with 17 points to lead all scorers and knocked down eight of her eight chances at the line in the win.

The Warriors built a six-point halftime lead with eight points from Marbury and six from Ana Sumpter before the break.

Kiana Childress set the pace for Fluvanna with a 12-point outing, but the Flucos struggled, as most teams do, to score against the stingy Warriors.

“We’re trying to find somebody else that can be consistent for us on the offensive end but they’re young and they’re still learning,” said Fluvanna coach Chad White. “It’s more of a confidence thing than anything, but (Western makes) it tough.”

Fluvanna will play Powhatan in a Thursday game as well for third place in the district.
