Albemarle girls tennis edges Powhatan

The Albemarle girls tennis team travelled to Powhatan to face the Indians on Monday and escaped with a 5-4 win on the road. Both teams played tough in singles and the scores reflected that with things knotted at 3 after the round.

Freshmen Grace Barrett-Johnson and Cami Pastore  picked up wins for the Patriots as did Junior Leah Lord. The Indians answered with wins from Senior Eliza Jones, Ashley Gribble and Isabella Murman.

The doubles matches went back and forth early with neither team gaining any breathing room. At the No. 2 spot Powhatan was able to settle in and keep the Patriots pinned on the baseline getting the 10-4 win. That put Powhatan up 4-3 but Albemarle would rally. At the No. 3 spot Margaux Hapgood and Shannon Barrett-Johnson held a slim lead throughout before earning a service break late to take a 10-7 win. That knotted things at 4 all and meant the No. 1 doubles match would decide things.  Powhatan went up early before the Patriots battled to level the match at 5 all. First Powhatan then Albemarle took leads over the next 5 games and when Freshman Beth Shafer stepped up to serve Albemarle was clinging to a 10-9 advantage.

Shafer and Lord fought through a deuce filled game and when a Powhatan return off a Lord volley sailed long, Albemarle secured the win.
