Spring Roundup 3.21.15: FUMA baseball, trio of Western teams grab wins

Fork Union’s baseball team was deadlocked in the bottom of the seventh when Adam Hackenberg stepped to the plate against the Richmond Patriots, the team from the Central Virginia Home School.

Hackenberg promptly ended the game with a one-out walk off single to give the Blue Devils a 3-2 win, their fifth of the season.

Julius Puryear came on in relief for FUMA (5-1) and struck out nine in just 3.2 innings to stop some early bleeding in the third inning at 2-0 and give the Blue Devils a chance to rally. Going into the seventh the Blue Devils were down 2-1 before Hackenberg provided the go-ahead hit.

Jacob Grabeel had a whale of a day for the Blue Devils too, going 3-for-4 at the plate while accounting for nearly half FUMA’s hits.

Western baseball blows past Spotswood

Western Albemarle’s baseball team jumped out to a big lead early and rolled 13-5 over Spotswood Thursday.

Western (2-0) scored 10 runs in the first three innings to grab a 10-0 advantage when Spotswood’s pitchers struggled with control and walked 10 batters.

Dylan Weiss made them pay with three hits including a triple to the fence in left center. Weiss, Steve Mangrum and Derek Domecq each had a pair of RBIs. Harrison Lund was also solid at the plate with an RBI while going 2 for 4.

Western girls tennis shuts out Fluvanna

The top six looked a bit different than it has the past four years without Emily Kochard at the top of the ladder for Western tennis, but Maddy Ix and the rest of the Warriors produced essentially the same results, winning 9-0 over Fluvanna County Thursday afternoon.

“It was a great start to our 2015 season,” said Western coach Ellen Markowitz. “We were proud of how the girls played and handled the conditions on a windy, cold day.”
